About

Craig Morrison, owner of Morrison Design Studio, is an innovative and experienced designer working to bring high-tech, architecturally significant houses to Ireland.

Born in Hobart, Tasmania, he took a winding path to his profession that led him to acquire a broad and unique skill set ranging from computer-aided design to streamlined manufacturing to designing homes and buildings suited to extreme environments.

“My first job was in an architect’s office doing technical drawings, and from there I moved on to a computer company where I became one of the first experts in CAD (computer-aided design).  I then took that skill to a huge ship-building company my father worked for and helped them expand production by using computers to plasma-cut frames and parts instead of building them out of many small parts.”

From there it was back to finish his university education, studying environmental design, while simultaneously working in an architect’s office.  He then took a year off to travel the world for a year looking at architecture, and was strongly influenced by modernist giants in the field such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and John Lautner.”

After marrying an Irish girl, he spent the next ten years moving back and forth between Australia and Ireland, working remotely producing construction documentation for Rosevear Stephenson Architects, rounding out his real-world education by working hands-on as a builder with Drew Heath Architect.

“I finally had a chance to build the modernist F+M house here in Kinsale and that led to yet another house, called ‘La Tamarin’ right next to the famed Bulman Pub that left the traditional house in place but added a modern extension.  I’ve had a fairly eclectic education on my way to this point in my career, but it’s given me all the tools I need to design and build world-class architectural houses that blend in perfectly with the beautiful historic architecture here in Kinsale and beyond.”
